On this Independence Day, as America celebrates 249 years of freedom, Trump is signing into law a bill that removes healthcare from millions and puts the most vulnerable at risk. There’s nothing patriotic about cruelty.
Yesterday, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a deadly reconciliation bill that severely cuts Medicaid and reduces essential public health programs to benefit the ultra-wealthy. This bill will take away health care from 17 million people—including the 40% of people living with HIV who rely on Medicaid—while also increasing food insecurity by cutting SNAP benefits that many in the HIV community depend on to stay healthy. The bill will also eliminate the HOPWA program, threatening over $40 million in housing and support services for low-income New Yorkers living with HIV, gutting the infrastructure that keeps people housed, healthy, and alive.
Make no mistake: this is a direct attack on the nation's HIV response.
By destabilizing Medicaid, threatening the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program, and removing critical nutrition supports, this bill paves the way for a resurgence of the HIV epidemic in the United States.
Housing Works strongly condemns this legislation.
We thank the thousands of HIV advocates who fought tirelessly against its passage. The fight is far from over—we will continue holding lawmakers accountable, oppose FY25 implementation, and demand full HIV funding in FY26.
Silence = Death.
We will not stay silent. We will fight back.
