At the end of May, The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) announced that its HOPWA program will distribute $32 million in grant awards to assist more than 1,300 low-income individuals and families living with HIV/AIDS. The money will go toward helping people living with housing, job training, and “employment readiness,” among other skills.

According to HUD’s press release, the grants will go toward housing and rental assistance service and programs in twenty states, and each client will receive approximately $24,800 in assistance.

“These grants will provide our local partners with crucial funding that is necessary to provide individuals and families living with HIV/AIDS a place to call home,” said HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan.

The deepest grants are going toward Key West, Florida, and San Francisco. This initiative to use housing to slow the spread of HIV/AIDS is a programmatic integration with the President’s “Opening Doors” plan that “identifies housing as a key component to preventing the spread of HIV.”
