Although the federal budget has been a hodge-podge of pros and cons for people living with HIV/AIDS and affected by homelessness, some good news just came out of Washington: President Obama has proposed to find the Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS at $332 million.

This amount marks as a $2 million increase from the $330 million requested in FY13, as well as a marked increase from the FY13 final funding level, which was only $315 after the effects of the Sequestration.

What’s more, President Obama is also looking to “modernize” HOPWA. This includes “readjusting” the formula that will distribute HOPWA funds by considering taking an area’s poverty, fair market rental costs, and concentration of people living with HIV/AIDS in the area.

And, as the National AIDS Housing Coalition reports, this new move to revamp the program also makes the program “more flexible, giving local communities more options to provide targeted, timely, and cost-effective interventions,” and will be key in keeping people living with HIV/AIDS housed and connected to treatment.
