We extend our gratitude to the City Council, Speaker Julie Menin, and Mayor Zohran Mamdani for reaching an agreement that expands CityFHEPS (the City Fighting Homelessness and Eviction Prevention Supplement) and finally resolves the lawsuit over its implementation. Ending homelessness requires sustained and meaningful city investment, and today’s agreement is a critical step forward in keeping New Yorkers permanently housed and addressing the city’s deepening housing crisis.
Today's victory follows years of advocacy by lawyers, organizers, and coalitions who fought for a city budget that reflects a vision that includes all New Yorkers. Once again, our city is demonstrating that it can lead by investing in proven solutions that prioritize stability and long-term housing. We especially thank the City Council’s Progressive Caucus, who held firm to ensure this budget would not move forward without CityFHEPS, a proven lifeline for families and individuals at risk of homelessness.
Affordable housing is not a luxury—it is a fundamental right. With this funding, our city is ensuring that its most vulnerable residents have the resources they need not just to survive, but to remain permanently housed in the communities they call home.
Today's investment in CityFHEPS proves that New York City has both the resources and the political will to house New Yorkers, and that sustained public investment is the real path to ending homelessness.” Said Charles King, Co-founder and CEO of Housing Works. “This moment is the result of relentless pressure from organizers, tenants, and advocates who refused to accept a system that pushed New Yorkers into homelessness. Housing Works will always fight to strengthen CityFHEPS, and ensure that all New Yorkers have permanent, stable housing.”
"New York City has faced a deepening housing crisis for years. Expanding CityFHEPS is an essential first step toward delivering stability and affordability for all New Yorkers. At Bailey House & Housing Works, we know housing is healthcare, and today’s victory marks a long-overdue investment in our communities." Said Andrew Coamey, Executive Director of Bailey House.
