World AIDS Day: A Call to Recommit to Ending the Epidemic, House People Living with HIV

This World AIDS Day, Housing Works joined with End AIDS NY allies to renew the call to house people living with HIV and AIDS and to end the epidemic in New York State by 2024.

NYC Community Organizer Valerie Reyes-Jimenez brought great pride to the whole Housing Works community when she addressed the UN General Assembly for its November 30th World AIDS Day observance. Valerie shared her story of living with HIV+ and being an engaged AIDS activist and advocate for over 30 years. She urged the Assembly to end homelessness and health inequity to help end the AIDS epidemic globally. Watch Valerie's incredible speech here.

On December 1st, we held a rally and march along with our allies, demanding immediate action to house low income people in NYS with HIV. We walked from Greenwich Village's Christopher Park to the AIDS Memorial, where we honored those we’ve lost and spoke out on the need to end homelessness in order to help end the AIDS epidemic. This is not merely a slogan; numerous studies have proven safe, stable housing improves healthcare outcomes for people living with HIV, reduces incidence of death from AIDS-related causes, and supports effective antiretroviral treatment that keeps people healthy and makes it impossible to transmit HIV to others.

We ended our day with a community forum The Center, where we heard from elected and appointed officials on their commitment to End the Epidemic by 2024. End The Epidemic coalition members and community leaders outlined policy priorities and spoke of their own experiences, demanding the government work with us to end the epidemic by 2024.
