This weekend, New York City celebrated Gay Pride, taking over Fifth Avenue and marching to the beat of progress as the Supreme Court overturned the horrid Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) earlier this week.
At this year’s Pride Parade, Housing Works marched with community partners Harlem United and Help/PSI under the joint theme: “Hope, Health, Healing,” evoking all three organizations’ dedication to serving and advocating alongside marginalized people living with and affected by HIV/AIDS and other chronic conditions. Staff, volunteers, and advocates from all three organizations turned out in mass to show their support, donning t-shirts and tank tops from all colors of the rainbow with a large “H” on the front and the three organizations’ name on the back.
Oscar Lopez, who works at Harlem United, said that he was blown away at the number of people who showed up to march with the organizations. “There were so many of us that at one point the only thing I could see was the very top of the first float!” Our group had two floats, complete with a DJ who kept things lively and entertaining for everyone.
This year’s Pride Parade was grand marshaled by three LGBT advocates: actor and activist Harry Belafonte, Earl Fowlkes of the Center for Black Equity, and finally, Edie Windsor, the brave and now legendary woman who brought her case before the Supreme Court to challenge the denial of federal benefits to same-sex couples because of DOMA.
