ADVOCACY EVENT ALERT: Join Worldwide Actions to Remember Those Brutalized by the Police

ADVOCACY EVENT ALERT: Join Worldwide Actions to Remember Those Brutalized by the Police

There are two more big advocacy opportunities this week:

WHAT: “Free Ourselves Community Vigil”

A Vigil and Speak-Out at Washington Square Park

WHEN: Monday, December 15, 6pm-9pm

Meet at 5:45pm on the South Side of the Fountain

Join Housing Works and our allies in the LGBT community and communities of color to shed light on and demand justice for our people who remain unnamed and brutalized by racist, sexist, homophobic, and transphobic police.

As we continue naming the violence that our communities face at the hands of law enforcement across the country, we must continue to lift up and name the Women, both Cis and Trans, Gender Non-Conforming, Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Black People and People of Color who have been lost to police violence, and who are survivors of police brutality.

WHAT: “I Can’t Breathe Worldwide Die-In”

In Honor of Eric Garner and All Unjustly Killed by the Police

WHEN: Wednesday, December 17, 6pm

Meet at 5:30pm at 620 Atlantic Avenue

This Wednesday, December 17, 2014, marks 5 months since Eric Garner was killed by the NYPD. As part of the ThisStopsToday coalition, Housing Works is calling on people throughout New York City, the United States, and the world to join a collective die-in to commemorate the 5-month anniversary of the NYPD murder of Eric Garner and demand justice for all those who have lost their lives to police.

At 5:30pm, the Housing Works team will meet at the Barclays Center–620 Atlantic Ave (near Flatbush Ave.) – and at 6:00pm, lay still on the ground, in silence, for 7 minutes. Then we will rise up to sing “I Can’t Breathe” by the Peace Poets. This song was written to honor the memory of Eric Garner and to connect his life to the collective struggle.

Other meet-up locations in NYC include:

  • BRONX – 149th St & Grand Concourse
  • MANHATTAN – Harlem State Building – 163 West 125th St. (near Adam Clayton Powell Blvd).

Please note that Housing Works employees may not be present in the Bronx or Manhattan. The 12/17 Die-In Rise Up! is part of the #ThisStopsToday #11Days of Action.
