Sam Beam is a singer-songwriter who has been creating music as Iron & Wine for over a decade. Through the course of six albums, numerous EPs and singles, and the initial volumes of an Archive Series - Iron & Wine has captured the emotion and imagination of listeners with distinctly cinematic songs. His latest release, Beast Epic, unfolds for the listener through a series of peaks and valleys, brimming with surprise flourishes, classic touches and an appealing confidence that is evident in songs like “Call It Dreaming,” “About a Bruise,” and the almost croony “Last Night.”

Opening with Beam’s trademark delivery in what feels like a call to arms in “Claim a Ghost” with its refrain “killers let go,” the song is at once both urgent and intimate.  This less is more approach, which is evident in Iron & Wine’s early work, takes center stage throughout Beast Epic. By the time the listener is half way thru the second track, “Thomas County,” it’s easy to think the characters in Iron & Wineclassics such as “Upward Over the Mountain” or “Dead Man’s Will” (with Calexico) reside here.

Beam notes one of his favorite phrases on this record, “getting even in a song” from “Bitter Truth,” comes from a conversation he had with Jerry Jeff Walker who perfected such a thing. Confessing that this is the first recording where he “finally figured out how to make records,” it’s safe to say, he had us fooled all along.

Beast Epic will be released via Sub Pop records on August 25 with a US tour starting on August 27 including two very special shows with a full band in New York on Nov 13 at Town Hall and Nov 14 at Brooklyn Steel.
