February events at Housing Works Bookstore Cafe: Boy, We Must Love You Guys.
We are always enthusiastic about our monthly line ups of literature, music, and comedy, but we are really, truly in love with February’s offerings. From the biggest names in books to the smallest indie presses, from storytelling to stand up, we have entertainment for all.
And for the more-refined palate, how about a country-camp alt-valentine’s party that will impress any date or help you find one? Or a panel about periods? No, really. We’re also tumbling into 2010 with a killer line up of hyper-literate bloggers and free beer, and slating in a Live Political Gabfest. There’s something for everyone, except people who really hate puns.

Housing. Medical Care. Food.
Dear Friend,
Housing. Medical Care. Food.
This is a holiday wish list for the tens of thousands of homeless and low-income New Yorkers living with HIV and AIDS.
As 2009 comes to a close, we ask Housing Works’ closest friends to consider making a year-end Membership or Annual Fund donation .
Now, more than ever, your support is needed. Your donation will directly fund vital services to the children, women, and men of Housing Works. All the things we so often take for granted, are what our clients wish for the most.
Of course, there are other ways to help. Whether you donate items to the Housing Works Book Store Café, Thrift Shops, or purchase unique holiday gifts for your friends, you are helping our clients live a better life.
And, remember, donations received by December 31, 2009 will qualify as 2009 tax deductions.
So, please, give to…

Rare Book Feature of the Week!
This wonderful illustration of colonial Philadelphia is just one of Norman Rockell’s additions to Benjamin Franklin’s legendary Poor Richard Almanack. Franklin began publishing his almanack in 1732, and it was so wildly popular (eventually selling over 10,000 copies) that he put out new editions for 25 years. Even Napoleon Bonaparte was a fan, and had it translated into Italian (the French was already immensely popular). The Almanack contained many things – poems, meteorological and astronomical information among them – but is today most famous for Franklin’s proverbs and aphorisms, such as “He who lives upon hope will die fasting.”
This collectible volume, produced by the Limited Editions Club in 1964, weds Franklin’s earthy, homespun wisdom with the splendidly colorful and organized compositions of Norman Rockwell. 1,500 hundred editions were printed in folio size with leather spines and a protective slipcase. Ours is number 1,408 and it is SIGNED by Rockwell on…
