126 Crosby Street
New York, NY 10012
Located in the heart of Soho, the Housing Works Bookstore Cafe has the classic look of a private library, with mahogany-paneled balconies, spiral staircases, and matching heavy display tables and shelves. The four original pillars, showing off the 20-foot ceilings, remind visitors of the building’s Soho warehouse past. Customers sit in overstuffed armchairs below the balconies while they drink their coffee and browse through the Bookstore Cafe’s unparalleled collection of used books. The Bookstore Cafe can accommodate events from 200 to 300 people.
The Housing Works Bookstore Cafe has a classic library look, with mahogany-paneled balconies, spiral staircases, and matching display tables and shelves. Four original pillars highlight the twenty-foot ceilings, and provide additional mahogany display space. Under the balcony are cozy alcoves where customers can sit and read or drink coffee, have a glass of wine and relax.
Every day customers tell us how beautiful our store is, and how happy they are to have found a peaceful oasis in the middle of the busiest shopping district in the city.
Our store has attracted the eye of countless film and TV location scouts. We have been the host to films such as The Squid and the Whale, The Girls Guide to Hunting and Fishing, and Enchanted; television’s Gossip Girl, Law & Order, and Sex and the City; and commercials for Holiday Inn Express, AT&T, and H and R Block. Print articles have appeared in the New York Times, Time Out, Village Voice, New York Magazine, Rolling Stone, Entertainment Weekly, and we were featured in a PSA promoting Independent Bookstores. Japanese and German magazines have used photos of our store in articles about shopping in Soho, and we have been included in several travel guides.
More frequently, though, the bookstore is home to parties for New York City’s literary and music community, to herald book releases or celebrate holidays. The New Yorker rents our space every year, Harper’s holds holiday parties and fundraisers here, the band Wilco had a private party and Poets & Writers and PEN American Center enjoy our space regularly. The store has also been rented for the annual meeting of New York Booksellers who belong to the ABA, and for wedding receptions, bar mitzvahs, and birthday parties. We look forward to creating a memorable night for you and your friends.
