Environmental Sustainability
When Housing Works was constructing the Brooklyn facility that would house our Women’s Transitional Housing Program (WTHP) LINK in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, we saw an an opportunity to begin incorporating “green” building principles into our mission to provide housing for homeless people living with HIV/AIDS. The WTHP features no-VOC (non-toxic) paints and adhesives, floor tiles made of 85 percent quartz and other recycled plastic materials, furniture made with recycled plastics, and 95 percent recycled carpet.
In May 2008, Housing Works was awarded a $5,000 Enterprise Community Partners grant for our Jefferson Avenue Housing Program, an abandoned building we’re transforming into a new housing facility slated to open in 2009. With the award, we were able to host an intensive design workshop that led to a practical plan to create the most environmentally friendly facility possible. Our goals for Jefferson Avenue include using green building materials, a green roof, high-efficiency lighting, renewable energy, water-conserving appliances, ventilation, and efficient energy use.
