WABC Profiles Jaclyn Smith’s Cylar House Renovation

Design on a Dime allows interior designers to use their skills to raise money for Housing Works’ life-saving services for poor New Yorkers living with HIV/AIDS. This year, participating Kmart designer Jaclyn Smith also showed the profound impact that interior designers can have directly on the lives of Housing Works clients.

On Tuesday, May 4, 2010, Smith visited our Keith D. Cylar House to present residents with her “Rooftop Makeover” project. Cylar House residents have always enjoyed the tranquility and fresh air of the roof deck, but Smith’s renovation has transformed the space into a garden oasis. In addition to an array of outdoor furniture, the new rooftop boasts a gazebo, a fountain, hanging plants and trellises and a barbecue.

The $10,000 renovation features items from Smith’s Kingsbury and Kensington collections; the landscaping was part of a generous donation from Urban Plantscapes.

The renovation marked several important events: the 25th anniversary of her Jaclyn Smith Home line; Housing Works’ 20th anniversary; and, of course, the sixth-annual installment of Design on a Dime.

David Peterson, a Cylar House resident, spoke at Tuesday’s moving ceremony. “I didn’t have anything before I came to Cylar House,” Peterson said. “A space like this means so much to me, and other residents here.”

“It’s a wonderful feeling to be able to help people,” Smith said in her remarks. “I hope you’ll enjoy this space in the moonlight and in the sunshine.”

After the ceremony, Peterson gave Smith a tour of his Cylar House studio.

Housing Works President and CEO Charles King spoke about the importance of quality housing for homeless New Yorkers living with HIV. “Keith Cylar, after whom Cylar House is named, believed that our housing should foster self-esteem and empowerment. This renovation is emblematic of that principle.”
