Even celebrities love great deals. Sponsored by Kmart and Sears, Housing Works Thrift Shops’ biggest fundraiser of the year, the Fifth-Annual Design on a Dime charity shopping event, kicks off on Thursday, May 7, with a glittering opening night party and exclusive preview shopping at the Metropolitan Pavilion (125 W.18th St) from 6pm to 9pm.

Event cochairs Parker Posey and James Huniford, participating designers Jaclyn Smith, Ty Pennington, John Bartlett, Charlotte Moss, Ernest de la Torre and other celebrities will all be on hand for the first look at 50 gorgeous room vignettes created by top interior designers. All vignette merchandise will be on sale for an incredible 60 to 80 percent off and all proceeds go to the nonprofit AIDS charity Housing Works.

Posey, who is collaborating with artist Scott Lenhardt and will be a part of a group gallery show opening May 22 at Taxter & Spengemann (123 E. 12th St), is donating one of her pottery creations to Design on a Dime. “I give and take from Housing Works all the time. It’s a great place to find distinctive things for your home. It’s ingenious!,” Posey says.

More about Design on a Dime

Created by Design on a Dime cochair James Huniford, of Huniford Design Studio, Design on a Dime has raised $2 million for Housing Works, Inc., New York’s largest AIDS service organization. Last year alone Design on a Dime raised $650,000 for Housing Works.

Design on a Dime will help provide funding for projects such as Housing Works’ recently opened congregate living facility, Stand Up Harlem House. Housing Works renovated three classic Harlem brownstones to create the residence, which now provides 16 apartments to homeless and low-income individuals and families affected by HIV and AIDS.
