Housing Works’ Biggest Annual Charity Shopping Event, Design on a Dime, Takes Place May 6-8

Housing Works’ sixth-annual Design on a Dime interior design charity extravaganza will take place from May 6 to 8 at the Metropolitan Pavilion at 125 West 18th. This year’s event, featuring return sponsors Kmart and Sears and media sponsor Traditional Home, will raise funds for Housing Works’ newest residence for New Yorkers living with HIV/AIDS, the Jefferson Avenue Housing Program in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn.

Design on a Dime is New York City’s most popular interior design charity event. Fifty of the world’s top interior designers create unforgettable room vignettes with new merchandise, donated and then sold for 50 to 70 percent off retail pricing.

Design on a Dime kicks off with a VIP sneak-preview shopping event on Thursday, May 6 from 6 PM to 9 PM. Tickets start at $150. The VIP sneak-preview also includes a silent auction of 100 framed photographs and artworks, including pieces from Zatista.com, The New York Photo Festival and Soho Photo Gallery. Participating designers Jaclyn Smith and Ty Pennington will both be on hand for the event.

Last year’s Design on a Dime raised nearly $500,000 for Housing Works, New York’s largest community-based AIDS service organization. Founded and chaired by Huniford’s James Huniford, Design on a Dime offers a rare opportunity to see the work of an array of high-profile talents under one roof. The list includes:

The Jefferson Avenue Housing Program, the beneficiary of this year’s Design on a Dime, will provide 12 apartments for homeless New Yorkers living with HIV/AIDS. The residence, which will have a green roof as well as other environmentally friendly features, will be located in Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood, one of the New York communities hardest hit by AIDS. Funded in part by the New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, Jefferson Avenue is slated to be completed by 2012.
