Reminder: Housing Works’ Design on a Dime Charity Shopping Extravaganza Starts Next Week

Groovy stuff for a good cause!

Housing Works’ sixth-annual Design on a Dime takes place from May 6 to 8 at the Metropolitan Pavilion at 125 West 18th. This year’s event, featuring return sponsors Kmart and Sears and media sponsor Traditional Home, will raise funds for Housing Works’ newest residence for New Yorkers living with HIV/AIDS, the Jefferson Avenue Housing Program in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn.

For Design on a Dime, 50 of the world’s top interior designers create unforgettable room vignettes with new merchandise, donated and then sold for 50 to 70 percent off retail pricing. Some of this year’s cool stuff:

Design on a Dime kicks off with a VIP sneak-preview shopping event on Thursday, May 6 from 6 PM to 9 PM. Tickets start at $150. The VIP sneak-preview also includes a silent auction of 100 framed photographs and artworks, including pieces from Zatista.com, The New York Photo Festival and Soho Photo Gallery. Participating designers Jaclyn Smith and Ty Pennington will both be on hand for the event.

The May 6 VIP event is followed by free and open-to-the-public shopping on Friday, May 7 (10 AM to 6 PM) and Saturday, May 8 (10 AM to 6 PM).

Last year’s Design on a Dime raised nearly $500,000 for Housing Works, New York’s largest community-based AIDS service organization. Founded and chaired by Huniford’s James Huniford, Design on a Dime offers a rare opportunity to see the work of an array of high-profile talents under one roof. The list includes:

Jamie Drake, Laura Kirar, Charlotte Moss, Ty Pennington, Miles Redd, Steven Sclaroff, Jarret Yoshida, Jaclyn Smith, Peter Som, Alan Tanksley, Nathan Thomas, Derek Warburton

The Jefferson Avenue Housing Program, the beneficiary of this year’s Design on a Dime, will provide 12 apartments for homeless New Yorkers living with HIV/AIDS. Located in Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood, one of the New York communities hardest hit by AIDS, Jefferson Avenue is slated to be completed by 2012.
