Media Alert!: Press Conference Opposing Appointment of NYC Commissioner Thomas Frieden to head CDC
WHAT: Press conference called by a coalition of AIDS, health and Latino organizations to oppose the possible appointment of New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene Commissioner Dr. Thomas Frieden to head the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
New York City AIDS and health advocates vehemently oppose the appointment, which would be made by President Obama, because Frieden favors coercive public health measures and surveillance over community input and access to lifesaving services.
See the New York Times City Room coverage of the opposition to Frieden’s appointment.
“President Obama must understand that appointing Commissioner Frieden to the top post at the CDC would be a devastating blow to combating HIV/AIDS in the U.S. as well as other chronic illnesses that require complex public health solutions and involvement from local communities,” said Housing Works President and CEO Charles King.
