Longtime HIV/AIDS Community Ally Johanne Morne Appointed as New NYS AIDS Institute Director
Albany, NY—Along with the other members of the statewide End AIDS NY 2020 Community Coalition, Housing Works is pleased at the recent announcement that Johanne Morne will succeed Dan O’Connell as new Director of the AIDS Institute upon O’Connell’s retirement. We could not be more pleased with Ms. Morne as the choice for this crucial position, and we are grateful to Governor Andrew Cuomo and to New York State Department of Health Commissioner Howard A. Zucker for taking seriously the concerns we voiced in appointing a new AIDS Institute Director.
Throughout this process of creating, and now implementing, New York’s plan to end the AIDS epidemic, a partnership has been formed between the organizations/agencies involved in the Ending the Epidemic Blueprint design and staff from both the Department of Health and Governor Cuomo’s office. We value these relationships and know our success depends on working together to reach our 2020 goals.
In her current role as Director of Office of Planning and Community Affairs at the AIDS Institute, Ms. Morne was so intricately involved in the process of developing the Blueprint, we truly believe there could be no better candidate for this position. Ms. Morne is both well-respected and trusted within the New York HIV/AIDS community, and we are excited to continue to work with the AIDS Institute with her at the helm.
We all share a common vision for ending AIDS as an epidemic in New York by 2020. We know that with the community and our government partners working together, we will more than achieve our goals.
“Johanne Morne has been a stalwart ally on the front lines of the fight to end AIDS for many years,” said Housing Works President and CEO Charles King. “Her years of service at the AIDS Institute combined with her impressive background as a community service provider enable her to address the needs of the most marginalized New Yorkers. Her collective experience and collaborative style make her a great partner in state government as we continue to implement the Ending the Epidemic Blueprint and work together to achieve an end to New York’s AIDS epidemic by 2020. We congratulate her on her new role and look forward to our future work together. ”
