Throughout the year, the Housing Works community copes with the deaths of numerous clients. In June, Housing Works mourned the loss of Carrington Brown, who received life-changing case management services at our 130 Crosby St. location.
Like so many other clients, Carrington came to Housing Works seeking help with housing and mental health care. Thanks in part to those services, Carrington had recently landed a new job, signed a lease on an apartment in the Bronx, and “found a renewed sense of life,” according to Sheila Vakharia, a Housing Works social worker who spent many hours counseling him.
At a moving memorial last week, Housing Works staffers and clients remembered Carrington’s tireless amiability, penchant for bringing poems to 130 Crosby, and his fierce independence. In the words of mourners, he was a “gentleman” with “high standards for himself.” Rachel Jackson, Brown’s case manager, recalled that “being dependent on the system was not an option for him.”
Said Vakharia, “He really was regaining so much. To lose him was such a heartache. But he died with dignity, which really is the only way Carrington knew how to live.”
