Housing Works client Pitches in On Jaclyn Smith “Rooftop Renovation”
Housing Works client Marilyn M. doesn’t just receive healthcare from Housing Works—she gives back, too. Marilyn, who attends Housing Works’ day treatment program in the West Village, recently joined a handful of other volunteers to help install the Rooftop Makeover project at Keith D. Cylar House.
Opened in 1997, Cylar House provides studio apartments to 36 Housing Works clients. As part of its contribution to this year’s Design on a Dime, Kmart asked designer Jaclyn Smith to transform the Cylar House roof deck into a outdoor patio oasis.
Marilyn noted how gratifying it is to volunteer. “A resident came upstairs to view the roof and he thanked us for all our help. That feels really good,” she said. Marilyn, who was diagnosed with HIV in 1997, will also volunteer at Design on a Dime, Housing Works’ annual interior design benefit event and public sale.
On Tuesday Smith visited our Keith D. Cylar House to present residents with her Rooftop Makeover project. In addition to an array of outdoor furniture, the new rooftop boasts a gazebo, a fountain, hanging plants and trellises and a barbecue. The makeover, was in total, a $10,000 value.
