Hey, Mr. President

Hey, Mr. President

Advocates are giving Obama 100 days to fulfill his AIDS strategy oath

To coincide with President Obama’s inauguration this week, the Campaign to End AIDS (C2EA) and dozens of other organizations and individuals sent a letter to Obama asking him to create a National AIDS Strategy within his first 100 days in office. Although there is near-universal consensus among AIDS advocates on the need for a National AIDS Strategy, there are disagreements about the timeline.

Due to the urgency of addressing AIDS in the U.S., the signers of the below letter believe that Obama and his team can and must put the basics of a plan in place within 100 days. Obama has stated his support for a National AIDS Strategy since October 2007 but has not specified a timeline.

Dear President Obama,

The Campaign to End AIDS (C2EA), a diverse coalition of people living with HIV/AIDS, their advocates and their loved ones from across the nation, would like to congratulate you on your historic inauguration as our 44th President of the United States. As we embark on this era of change, we are looking forward to you fulfilling your promise of developing and implementing a National AIDS Strategy.

We have greatly appreciated the access to your transition team to discuss the urgent needs of people living with HIV/AIDS and their ability to access health care and prevention information. We look forward to continued transparency and partnership with your administration as we develop a comprehensive plan to end AIDS domestically and globally.

We stress the urgency of developing a National AIDS Strategy in order to end the AIDS epidemic, which to date, has killed more than 600,000 Americans. In your first 100 days we look forward to working with you to:

• Identify a high-level person in the White House to shepherd the National AIDS Strategy.
• Identify a process whereby people living with HIV/AIDS will be in the leadership in the development of the National AIDS Strategy.
• Identify a process for intergovernmental collaboration in the development and implementation of the National AIDS Strategy.
• Identify National AIDS Strategy goals, objectives and a timeline for the completion of the plan
• Identify and include resources to fund the process, communications and ongoing monitoring and progress of the National AIDS Strategy

Signed,

The Campaign to End AIDS (C2EA)
