Bjork and Dirty Projectors Raise $40,000 in One Night for Housing Works AIDS Services

Last Friday, 300 lucky guests crowded into Housing Works Bookstore for a very special installment of the bookstore’s LIVE FROM HOME concert series: A collaboration between musical legend Björk and the up-and-coming Brooklyn band The Dirty Projectors. It was a night of never before heard music to benefit Housing Works, Inc. The music was transcendent, and the concert raised $40,000 for for Housing Works Inc., which provides direct services for homeless New Yorkers with HIV and AIDS.

Jon Pareles wrote in The New York Times “Bjork sings like a force of nature” and Rob Harvilla noted that in The Village Voice that it was “Quite the surreal scene” and not just due to the music— “with David Byrne and M.I.A. lurking (separately) in the balcony’s weddings/etiquette section as rangy Battles frontman Tyondai Braxton further obstructs your view.”

The room was full of people drinking Sixpoint Ale beer from Whole Foods, Hendricks Gin and Reyka Vodka cocktails and wondering what lay in store. Björk and the Dirty Projectors each chose an opening act: Olöf Arnalds, a singer from Björk’s native Iceland, and Kurt Weisman, from Vermont. Hosting the evening was bookstore board member and Stereogum writer Brandon Stosuy, who introduced the musicians and conceived of the evening.

The night was a huge success as a fundraiser—the concert raised close to $40,000 for Housing Works, Inc., helping the mission to end AIDS and homelessness. Thanks to everyone who helped make it such an amazing night! Stereogum also helped to record the show, so for anyone who missed it, video will be coming soon!
