Housing Works Staffers Arrested at NYC Protest Demanding Obama Fulfill Global AIDS Promises
Housing Works’ activist roots were on high-profile display earlier this month. Eight activists, including two Housing Works staffers, were arrested on Thursday, May 13, 2010 at a civil disobedience protest in Midtown calling on President Obama to fulfill his global AIDS funding promises.
The protest was timed to Obama’s presence at a $15,000-a-head Democratic fundraiser, and the eight arrestees were supported by some 500 noisy demonstrators, including dozens from Housing Works. Candidate Obama promised $50 billion for global AIDS over five years, but has flat-funded those efforts—and new money for Haiti has yet to be approved.
“Tens of thousands of Haitians could die unnecessarily if we don’t act quickly,” said Christine Campbell, Vice President for National Advocacy & Organizing at Housing Works.
