The Undetectables Project
Introducing… The Undectectables Project
A groundbreaking new campaign aimed at helping 80% or more of the Housing Works HIV+ community achieve — and maintain — viral suppression. The Undectectables Project combines a comic book narrative with a dedicated community support from medical and Case Management staff to achieve its goal.
Who are The Undetectables?
The Undetectables are a group of superheroes, modeled after Housing Works’ HIV+ clients, whose mission is to fight and end AIDS. They struggle against stigma, fear, apathy and denial in their quest to reduce their own viral loads and stay undetectable – and recruit others to do so.
What is Viral Load?
HIV Viral Load (VL) is the amount of HIV present in the blood. An undetectable viral load means lower amounts of the HIV virus in blood, and less likelihood of transmitting the HIV virus to others.
How can someone’s viral load become undetectable?
Adherence to the right HIV medication (antiretrovirals) will generally result in an undetectable Viral Load.
Why isn’t everyone undetectable then?
Adherence to HIV meds isn’t always easy. Issues of stigma, disclosure, substance use, mental health issues, or even other medical conditions can make it difficult for someone to adhere to their HIV medications.
How does The Undectables Project work?
The comic and supporting materials engage our clients with compelling visuals illustrated by Rafa Alvarez and a familiar story line told through the lens of everyday struggles clients encounter, with a twist. The comic shows that you don’t need to have superpowers to be a superhero and is designed to empower, engage and excite clients to enroll in The Undetectables Project. Eligible clients who enroll in the project will have access to several medication adherence tools including:
- Support Groups
- Behavioral Health Assessment
- Directly Observed Therapy (DOT)
- Pill Boxing
- Financial Incentives
Housing Works staff are being trained to help clients access these adherence tools as well as provide supportive counseling and motivational interviewing.
Who is eligible to join?
Any HIV+ client enrolled in Housing Works Primary Care plus one other Housing Works program
