The Kurt Vonnegut Book Group: GOD BLESS YOU, MR. ROSEWATER

Saturday, January 18, 2014 at 12:30pm

Kurt Vonnegut was one of the most fascinating writers working in the latter half of the 20th century. He was a prolific author of short stories, novels, and essays, who delighted us with his playfully comedic and fiercely humanistic view of our world. He was also a great champion of free speech issues who fought hard against forces that sought to challenge, and outright ban, his work and the work of fellow artists.

Housing Works Bookstore is joining forces with Vonnegut NYC—the New York chapter of the Kurt Vonnegut Memorial Library—to present a spirited discussion group rooted in the essence of Kurt Vonnegut. We will be reading Vonnegut's fiction and non-fiction, as well related work that touches on issues close to the author's heart.

The Kurt Vonnegut Book Group meets once a month in the bookstore's café. It will be hosted by the founding members of Vonnegut NYC (including HWBC assistant store manager, Merril Speck). They will provide discussion questions and lead the meeting. The group is open to all who are interested!

More on God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater by Kurt Vonnegut: Eliot Rosewater, philanthropist, alcoholic, volunteer fireman, and avid fan of sci-fi writer Kilgore Trout, is made the head of the multi-million-dollar Rosewater Foundation by his father, the corrupt Indiana Senator Lister Rosewater.  The Foundation isn't actually meant to do anything, of course; it is merely a way for Lister and his lawyers to avoid paying taxes on the Rosewater's inherited wealth.  When Eliot moves back to economically depressed Rosewater County, Indiana, to set up a crisis hotline to try and do some good for the poor people there, Norman Mushari, a conniving lawyer with the Rosewater Foundation, sees this as his opportunity to get his hands on some of the Rosewater millions.

Our thanks to Random House for generously donating copies of God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater. It will be available in the bookstore at half price.
