From Junot Diaz, Lynda Barry, Gary Shteyngart, and Kate Christensen to popular up-and-comers like Dan Kennedy, Wendy McClure, and Brock Clarke,_ Love Is a Four-Letter Word_ is a contemporary collection of true stories of seduction, heartbreak, and regret. Fearlessly revealing their shattered hearts and crushed egos; their indiscretions and indignities; their delusions, desperation, and disappointments, these talented writers capture the dark side of love in prose ranging from comic to poetic, poignant to cringe-inducing.
BROCK CLARKE is the author of two novels, An Arsonist’s Guide to Writers’ Homes in New England and The Ordinary White Boy and two short story collections, Carrying the Torch and What We Won’t Do. He has twice been a finalist for the National Magazine Award in fiction. His fiction and essays have appeared in the Virginia Quarterly Review,the Believer, One Story, Southern Review, Georgia Review, the New York Times, and New England Review; in the Pushcart Prize and New Stories from the South annual anthologies; and on NPR’s Selected Shorts. He is a 2008 NEA fellow in fiction, and teaches at the University of Cincinnati.

WENDY MCCLURE is a columnist for BUST magazine and was a frequent contributor to the “True-Life Tales” feature in the New York Times Magazine. She is the author of the memoir I’m Not the New Me and the humor book The Amazing Mackerel Pudding Plan,and her work has appeared in several anthologies, including Sleepaway: Writings on Summer Camp. She has an MFA in poetry from the Iowa Writer’s Workshop and lives in Chicago, where she works as a children’s book editor and maintains a Weblog at Poundy.com.
MAUD NEWTON is a writer and blogger who grew up in Miami and now lives in a section of Brooklyn, New York, that has avoided gentrification into a hipster wonderland. Her essay, “Conversations You Have at Twenty,” won second prize in the 2008StoryQuarterly/Narrative Love Story Contest. Her essays and stories have also appeared inSwink, Mr. Beller’s Neighborhood, storySouth, Eyeshot, Maisonneuve, Pindeldyboz, Ducts, and the anthology When I Was a Loser, and she has written for the New York Times Book Review, the American Prospect, the Washington Post, the Boston Globe, Los Angeles Times, Newsday, Gawker, VH1’s Best Week Ever blog, and other publications and Web sites, including her own. In 2004 the City College of New York chose her as the recipient of its Irwin and Alice Stark Short Fiction Award.
SAÏD SAYRAFIEZADEH is the author of When Skateboards Will Be Free, a memoir about growing up communist in the United States. His essays and short stories have appeared in the Paris Review, Granta, and Open City, among others.

Live From Home Concert with Assembly of Dust and David McMillin
- Wednesday, July 15, 2009 at 7:00 PM
- Bookstore Cafe
- 126 Crosby Street, New York, NY 10012 :: 212-334-3324
Hearing Assembly of Dust has the flush of meeting a stranger who will inform your life in profound & happy ways, someone whose wise council might help you see the world in a fresh light. They possess the same tuneful philosophizing as storytellers like The Band, Paul Simon and Crosby, Stills & Nash, giving the listener good songs playing on a daydream radio. Led by Reid Genauer, they make great homespun music. Parts are gentle and tempered with an earthy wisdom that understands whiskey & tears are often the best cures. Other moments find a more forceful voice supported by topnotch musicianship & blistering emotion. Formed in 2002 after Genauer left cult jam stars Strangefolk, AOD is made up of some of the finest East Coast musicians going.
Though only twenty-three, David McMillin has experienced a lifetime of love and loss, of good times and heartbreak. He’s been quietly touring the country for almost two years (headlining shows and supporting artists like Shelby Lynne, Josh Ritter, Tristan Prettyman, Marc Cohn, Ryan Bingham, Martin Sexton and Shawn Mullins), steadily following the road that the original troubadours took. Some call his music folk or blues, others say it’s alt. country. He’s got his own name for it: “old-fashioned whiskey and cigarettes rock and roll.”

Live From Home with Vienna Teng, Diane Birch, and Coralie Clément
- Bookstore Cafe
- 126 Crosby Street, New York, NY 10012 :: 212-334-3324
Live From Home presents a concert with Vienna Teng, Diane Birch, and Coralie Clément.
Vienna Teng is a songwriter, singer and pianist with four critically acclaimed albums that have landed her on three Billboard charts and in Amazon.com’s top ten. She’s opened for the likes of India Arie, Joan Baez and Madeleine Peyroux and has appeared on NPR and The Late Show with David Letterman. Her brand of sophisticated, piano-driven pop has been gathering accolades ever since: “seductive and transcendent” (Amazon.com), “gorgeously conceived… accomplished yet understated” (Paste), “singular among her peers” (Variety). Her fourth album, Inland Territory (Rounder), is a tour de force musically and lyrically, a complex and deeply thoughtful work from an artist cut loose from limitations.
Diane Birch has lived all over the world, including Zimbabwe, South Africa and Australia, and cultivated a very individual style that defies categorization. The buzz is building as Music Week announced, “Diane has a voice and songwriting ability that will connect with truly global audiences.” S-Curve Records will release BibleBelt June 2, 2009.
Coralie Clément is in NYC from Paris — a rare event — to perform at Central Park’s SummerStage during Fete de la Musique. She’s French, she roller skates, and her new album Toystore (June 16) was made with all toy instruments.

Press conference exposing Mayor Bloomberg’s health-budget hypocrisy: The mayor refuses to say where $1 billion in federal Medicaid stimulus went in his new budget; meanwhile he’s making nearly $10 million in cuts to New York City AIDS services and nearly $20 million to public health services overall.
Cuts will mean elimination of community-based case managers upon whom poor New Yorkers living with AIDS depend for access to a range of lifesaving services including housing and medical care. Cuts will also mean scaled-back HIV prevention efforts and scaled-back food pantry and meals programs.

Advocacy & Activism Events
Housing Works plays a major role in advocating for the rights of transgender New Yorkers, who are disproportionately affected by HIV/AIDS.
The Gender Expression and Nondiscrimination Act (GENDA) would prevent discrimination against transgender people and discrimination on the basis of gender identity, passed in the Assembly this year. Now with the Dems in control of the Senate, there’s a better-than-even chance that this overdue bill, sponsored by Sen. Tom Duane, could finally become law in New York State.
Housing Works will be attending the Empire State Pride Agenda Equality and Justice Day on April 28, where GENDA will be one of the key bills legislators will be lobbied about.

In a never before seen or heard collaboration with The Dirty Projectors, Björk will perform a suite of new music composed for her by David Longstreth of The Dirty Projectors. The suite, written for five voices, will pair Björk with the Projectors (Dave Longstreth, Amber Coffman, Angel Deradoorian, and Haley Dekle).
In 2008, the Dirty Projectors covered Björk’s “Hyperballad” for a Stereogum tribute CD, a track-by-track covers project that also includes Liars, No Age, High Places, and members of Grizzly Bear, among others. Housing Works Board Member and Stereogum Senior Writer Brandon Stosuy, who knew of Björk and David Longstreth’s admiration for each other’s work, approached the artists about performing together at Housing Works. It is their first collaboration.

Live From Home with Jolie Holland
- Bookstore Cafe
- 126 Crosby Street, New York, NY 10012 :: 212-334-3324
Tickets will be available at the door at 7pm.
Housing Works Bookstore presents a benefit concert with Jolie Holland and opening act Ana Egge.
Jolie Holland co-founded the folk outfit, the Be Good Tanyas in the late 90’s. Holland went solo in 2001 and recorded a collection of demos that later became released as Catalpa. The demos garnered praise worldwide from fans, press and fellow musicians, including Tom Waits who nominated Holland’s Catalpa _for the esteemed Shortlist music prize. Her debut LP, _Escondida, came out in 2004 and immediately established Holland as one of the nation’s most important young songwriters. Her newest album, The Living and the Dead was released in October 2008
“There’s an old and durable American myth being served in Ms. Holland’s persona: the folk singer who’s from everywhere and nowhere…when she sings she becomes a hungry museum of stray voices…” –Ben Ratliff, New York Times
Lucinda Williams once called her “a folk Nina Simone.” But Ana Egge is more country than that. Rolling Stone reviewed her newest album, Road to my Love “the singer–songwriter crafts homespun hymns on her sixth disc to sing with your bare feet on the dashboard. Egge’s rootsy pedal–steel pop recalls singers like Shawn Colvin, but her sharply observed tales of the overlooked and underpaid feel utterly of the moment.”

AIDS activists from around the country are marking President Obama’s 50th day in office next Wednesday by issuing an AIDS report card to Obama, as well as to their own city and state governments. The results for New York City and State officials? New York City is flunking and New York State isn’t far behind.
Join hundreds of AIDS activists grade Paterson and Bloomberg’s abysmal response to the AIDS epidemic.
The city’s three largest AIDS groups—Gay Men’s Health Crisis, Harlem United and Housing Works—will participate in a rally of more than 400 people to bring attention to the report cards being issued to Obama, New York City and New York State.
Similar rallies and report cards are being issued by Campaign to End AIDS chapters in eight cities across the country.
