Housing Works Bookstore presents a benefit concert with Jolie Holland and opening act Ana Egge.
Jolie Holland co-founded the folk outfit, the Be Good Tanyas in the late 90’s. Holland went solo in 2001 and recorded a collection of demos that later became released as Catalpa. The demos garnered praise worldwide from fans, press and fellow musicians, including Tom Waits who nominated Holland’s Catalpa _for the esteemed Shortlist music prize. Her debut LP, _Escondida, came out in 2004 and immediately established Holland as one of the nation’s most important young songwriters. Her newest album, The Living and the Dead was released in October 2008
“There’s an old and durable American myth being served in Ms. Holland’s persona: the folk singer who’s from everywhere and nowhere…when she sings she becomes a hungry museum of stray voices…” –Ben Ratliff, New York Times
Lucinda Williams once called her “a folk Nina Simone.” But Ana Egge is more country than that. Rolling Stone reviewed her newest album, Road to my Love “the singer–songwriter crafts homespun hymns on her sixth disc to sing with your bare feet on the dashboard. Egge’s rootsy pedal–steel pop recalls singers like Shawn Colvin, but her sharply observed tales of the overlooked and underpaid feel utterly of the moment.”
