What do we need??
HUD programs must be funded at the level requested by the Obama Administration!
HUD’s Homeless Assistance Grants’ programs help house those with the greatest need. Permanent housing assures better health outcomes, access to care, positive social networks, and financial success and stability. HUD should be provided the full $2.38 billion to help our most vulnerable, including unacceptably high numbers of homeless youth, achieve healthy, productive lives.
Sequestration must be overturned as a whole!
Sequestration significantly cuts virtually all homelessness and affordable housing programs. HUD estimated that more than 100,000 homeless and formerly homeless people will be removed from housing or shelter programs from sequestration alone. Sequestration is and will continue to severely impact the provision of safe, decent, and affordable housing and necessary supportive services.
WE WERE MAKING PROGRESS!
Proposed cuts to HUD programs will hinder the slow decrease in homelessness. Between 2009 and 2011 there was a 1% decrease (about 7,000 people) in homelessness across the United States. But in 2011, 6.5 million ‘poor’ households STILL spent more than 50% of their income on housing. That is unacceptable!
