Festa Brasiliera: Celebrating Granta 121: The Best of Young Brazilian Novelists

Granta magazine presents an evening of Brazilian literature and music to mark the launch of Granta 121: The Best of Young Brazilian Novelists. Join Best Young Brazilian Novelists J.P. Cuenca, Miguel Del Castillo and Daniel Galera for readings and conversation with Granta editor John Freeman.

Miguel Del Castillo was born in Rio de Janeiro. His father is Uruguayan and his mother is from Rio. While studying architecture at PUC-Rio, Del Castillo worked as editor of the culture and architecture magazine Noz. In 2010, he moved to São Paulo, where he is now an editor at Cosac Naify publishing house. He received the Paulo Britto Award for Poetry and Prose for his story ‘Carta para Ana’ and is currently at work on his first collection of short stories, from which ‘Violeta’ is taken.

J.P. Cuenca was born in Rio de Janeiro. He is the author of the novels Corpo presente (2003), O dia Mastroiani (2007) and O único final feliz para uma história de amor é um acidente (2010), which will be published in the U.S. in 2013. His work has been published in German, Portuguese and Spanish. ‘Before the Fall’ (‘Antes da queda’) is taken from a new novel, forthcoming in 2013.

Daniel Galera was born in São Paulo but has spent most of his life in Porto Alegre. He co-founded the publishing house Livros do Mal, which then published his collection of stories Dentes guardados (2001) and his novel Até o dia em que o cão morreu (2003). His second novel, Mãos de cavalo (2006), has been published in Argentina, Italy, France and Portugal and is forthcoming in the UK. Cordilheira (2008) won the Brazilian National Library’s Machado de Assis Prize. In 2010, he wrote the graphic novel Cachalote with illustrator Rafael Coutinho. ‘Apnoea’ (‘Apneia’) is part of a novel in progress.
