Epic Win: A 4chan Variety Show

Wednesday, September 7 , 2011 at 7:00pm

A night of performances designed to mimic the anarchy and frenetic pace of 4chan, the imageboard that launched LOLcats and rickrolling, and to celebrate Epic Win for Anonymous: How 4chan’s Army Conquered the Web (Overlook Press). Hosted by Epic Win author Cole Stryker and featuring IRL bloggers and Web personalities performing dialogues and conversations from the infamous meme factory.

Even if you think you haven’t heard of 4chan, you have. 4chan is the “Anti-Facebook,” a site that radically encourages anonymity. It spawned the hacktivist group Anonymous, which famously defended WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange by bringing down MasterCard’s and Visa’s Web sites. Created by a 15-year-old wunderkind in 2003, it is the creative force behind “the Web’s most infectious memes and catchphrases” (Wired). Today it has over 12 million monthly users, with enormous social influence to match.

Featuring presentations, dialogues, and performances by: Late Night with Jimmy Fallon bloggers Cory Cavin, Josh Lay and Emmy Blotnick; Disappointing Gay Best Friend‘s Tyler Coates and Mikala Bierma; Slacktory editor Nick Douglas; author Rachel Fershleiser; Urlesque’s Christine Friar; author Beth Griffenhagen; comedian Halle Kiefer; web personality Aaron Lefkove; Buzzfeed’s Chris Menning; web personality Rex Sorgatz; My Damn Channel’s Molly Templeton; Tumblr’s Topherchris; We Have Lasers!!!!!!!!!! blogger Lindsey Weber; Cashcats.biz impresario and author Will Zweigart.

Cole Stryker is a freelance writer and media consultant based in New York City. His writing has appeared at Urlesque, Nerve, Popmatters, and Play. He has appeared on podcasts such as The Urly Show and Al Jazeera’s Global Village Voices. His personal blog can be found at stryker.tumblr.com.
