Conversations on Practice: Matt Kish with Glenn Kurtz, Presented with McNally Jackson

Thursday, November 7, 2013 at 7:00pm

Housing Works Bookstore Cafe will host McNally Jackson‘s monthly series, Conversations on Practice. Matt Kish (Heart of Darkness) discusses his artistic process and the artist's life with Glenn Kurtz (Practicing). Kish will sign books after the discussion; a portion of book sales will go to benefit Housing Works’ mission to fight homelessness and AIDS.

Conversations on Practice is an ongoing series at McNally Jackson hosted by Glenn Kurtz and devoted to the daily work of art-making. He discusses with artists, musicians, and authors how they hone their craft and understand their own work

Matt Kish is a self-taught artist from Ohio, where he lives with his wife, their two frogs, and far too many books. He has created one illustration for every page of Moby-Dick, fully illustrated Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness, and had his work appear in the Chicagoan, Propeller Magazine and Salt Hill Journal. He has also illustrated The Alligators of Abraham by Robert Kloss and The Desert Places by Amber Sparks and Robert Kloss.

Glenn Kurtz is the author of Practicing: A Musician's Return to Music (Knopf, 2007; Vintage Books, 2008), which received enthusiastic reviews in the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, The Wall Street Journal, and many other publications. Practicing was featured on NPR's “Weekend Edition” with Scott Simon, “To the Best of our Knowledge,” WNYC’s “Leonard Lopate Show,” and elsewhere. An Italian edition appeared in 2010. He is the host of “Conversations on Practice,” a discussion series about writing and the writer’s life. Previous guests have included Patti Smith, Jennifer Egan, Adam Gopnik, Francine Prose, and many others. Glenn’s second book, Three Minutes in Poland: Discovering a Lost World in a 1938 Home Movie, is forthcoming from Farrar, Straus & Giroux.
