Community Archives, Radical Histories: Housing Works History & NYC Trans Oral History Project

Gavin Browning, creator of Housing Works History, will present the project, a multimedia timeline which tells the story of the grassroots AIDS organization that continues to transform New York City through advocacy, services, and housing. He will be joined by Valerie Reyes-Jimenez, AIDS activist, spokesperson, longterm HIV survivor, and New York City organizer at Housing Works Inc.

Jeanne Vaccaro and Michelle O'Brien, two organizers of the NYC Trans Oral History Project, will present on their groundbreaking project--a community archive, organized in collaboration with the New York Public Library, devoted to the collection, preservation and sharing of trans histories. They will be joined by Tanya Walker, LGBT activist, co-founder of New York Transgender Advocacy Group, trans outreach specialist at Choices Medical Center, and Audre Lorde Project board member.

Following the presentations, Housing Works' director of Advocacy Communications, Elizabeth Koke will facilitate a conversation about archiving activist histories.
