From a bus ride to a job interview, Ms. Diva gets the runaround while getting around. “We’re Shady, We’ll Call You Back” is a new interactive forum play based on the real life experiences of Housing Work’s 13 Theatre Troupe, addressing transphobia, ableism and employment discrimination. Performed in partnership with social justice nonprofit Theatre of the Oppressed NYC, the 13 Theatre Troupe began in fall 2011 is comprised of actors who are living with or affected by HIV/AIDS.
“‘We’re Shady, We’ll Call You Back’ is one of our most creative shows yet,” said Candace Rivela, recreation coordinator at Housing Works. “The hope is that we are able to brainstorm with our audience and the wider community, about what we can do to fight injustices against transgender people and people with disabilities, not just limited to HIV”
Recently, Housing Works was selected to receive Theatre of the Oppressed NYC’s Community Partnership Award. Client and actor Levorne Moore accepted the award on behalf of the organization.
You can catch “We’re Shady, We’ll Call You Back” on Monday, January 13 at 7pm for free at the Housing Works Bookstore Cafe. Upcoming performances will be announced this spring on Theatre of the Oppressed NYC’s website.blog comments powered by Disqus
