Cafe Menu

If the store is open, the cafe’s serving. Enjoy fresh food and drink served by friendly volunteers in a space The New York Times calls “the literary salon the city has been missing.”

We cook and bake fresh daily using local seasonal ingredients whenever possible. We reserve tables on a case-by-case basis for small groups and meetings and offer in-house catering. Email for more information.

  • We proudly serve Intelligentsia Coffee
  • Espresso drinks are made with Intelligentsia’s Black Cat Espresso on our La Marzocco machine
  • We use local dairy from Hudson Valley Fresh
  • A range of herbal and black hot teas
  • Cold-brewed iced coffee and house-brewed specialty iced teas
Beer/Wine (what’s better than books and beer?)
Happy Hour Specials: All Day on Fridays from June through August
  • Buckets of beer (5 beers): PBR $12, Brooklyn Lager $20, Sixpoint Sweet Action $24
  • Bottle of wine $15
  • Grilled cheese or PB&J with a Brooklyn Lager $8
  • Grab-bag beer buckets (1 PBR, 1 Brooklyn Lager, and 3 “surprise” beers!)
Sandwiches (made fresh on premises on Balthazar bread)*
  • Turkey, apple, Brie with mayo on a baguette
  • Grilled cheddar cheese with Dijon mustard on pan de mie
  • Thinly sliced red pepper, radish, and cucumber with fresh basil and lemon hummus on a baguette (vegan)
  • Roasted portabella with mozzarella, blanched sun-dried tomatoes and a drizzle balsamic reduction on focaccia
  • Grilled peanut butter and raspberry preserved on pan de mie
Salads (vary daily, made fresh on premises, most are vegan and gluten-free)*
  • Orzo salad with peas, corn, and feta cheese
  • Mediterranean chick pea salad with red onions, cucumber, and red pepper
  • Corn salad with black beans, red onions, tomato, and cilantro
  • Quinoa with roasted seasonal vegetables
Soups from Hale & Hearty (usually vegetarian, sometimes vegan — please ask and we will find out for you)*
  • Change on a daily basis, so drop by to find out what’s hot!
  • Croissants and pastries from Balthazar Bakery
  • Blueberry and carrot raisin muffins baked on site daily
  • Chocolate chip, peanut butter, oatmeal raisin, and “kitchen sink” cookies baked on site daily
  • Hand-packaged yogurt parfaits include non-fat Greek yogurt, strawberry preserves, and house-made granola
  • Pumpkin nut, zucchini nut, and banana chocolate chip breads from Jae and Ess Bakery
Weekend Brunch Options
  • Quiche, ranges in flavors but always includes a vegetarian and a meat option
  • House—made cinnamon rolls
  • Soup + salad $8
  • Sandwich + soup or salad $8–$10 (depending on sandwich selected)
  • NEW! Brown bag special: add chips and a fountain drink to any sandwich for +$2.50
