School’s Out for Summer!

92nd Street Y Passport NYC Kids

No more teachers, no more books! Now that school’s out for summer, our devoted Housing Works customers and volunteers can get to work readying their wardrobes with hot in-store deals on cool threads. The summer months are ideal for spending your free time having fun in the sun at sizzling HW celebrations or giving back to our community by helping out at our thrift shops.

Every summer our Volunteer Department receives countless requests from numerous city-wide Summer Youth Programs to have their student-volunteers work in our thrift shops, health care facilities, offices, warehouse and at our special events. This summer, two groups of volunteers have been a tremendous help at our stores. We would like to give a big Housing Works shout-out to the 92nd Street Y Passport NYC volunteers coordinated by Sharon and Samantha Goldman as well as our Academy for Scholarship and Entrepreneurship through Ms. Cheryl Barzey at from The Children’s Aid Society.

Volunteers from Passport NYC worked at our warehouse and our Chelsea, Hell’s Kitchen, Soho, Upper East Side, Upper West Side and West Village thrift shops. These “Fashion Teens” and impressive student- volunteers utilized their shared “Passion for Fashion” to help further the mission of Housing Works by assisting our thrifts staff and loyal Housing Works clientele. Passport NYC and Children’s Aid Society volunteers dressed forms, set sales floors and shelf toppers, color coordinated clothes, arranged furniture and most importantly learned from some of the best creative minds in the industry—our very own Housing Works Thrifts staff and seasoned Thrifts volunteers—how to run a successful store all while doing good work for a great cause.
