Design on a Dime 2009: Thrift Shops: Chelsea: The Elegant Thrifter:
Decorating on a Dime
Even though I’ve shared parts of this story before, I am bringing the subject up again as Design on a Dime approaches to highlight what an amazing resource Housing Works Thrift Shops are, especially when you’re in a pinch to finish a project and have nearly no cash on hand. Such was the case when my agent, Allison Hemming of The Hired Guns, asked me to give her office a last minute re-do to greet some fancy Hollywood producers. Thank goodness she’s on 17th Street, just half a block away from the Chelsea Housing Works. I was looking for wall decor to distract from a somewhat-ugly book cabinet and there in the corner were three examples — already grouped! — perfect for Allison’s office. I think I paid about $40 for all three, and the themes and the colors fit right in.
Design on a Dime is New York City’s most popular interior design charity event! For the fifth anniversary, 50 of the world’s top interior designers will create unforgettable room vignettes with new merchandise, donated and then sold for 60 to 80 percent off retail pricing.

I was just looking over the Housing Works Thrift Store section written by the “Elegant Thrifter”,,,If I was in charge of the thrift stores his title would be changed to “Elegant Drifter”. Obviously this character needs an increase in his food stamps and possibly a free trip to Mexico to take “Aesthetics 101”,,,or maybe at least finish the 2nd grade…I hear 2nd grade diplomas are as easy to get down there as is buying over the counter “prescription drugs”.
Evidence:

this “garbage can” creation doesn’t even have components from the same genre…where is the cohesiveness?,,,other than they were all bought at the same store. He should have added some daisy print contact paper behind this on the wall…it would have been appropriate.
Where did Housing Works pick up this human? at a 99 cents store in New Jersey? I hate to sound harsh but what position can “these kind of people” get in, that I’m not aware of.
They need to change the name of the blog to: “Decorating on a Spare Cigarette” Or: “Helping Handicapped Designers Who Obviously Can’t Help Themselves”,,,and if you read the article which says this “case when my agent, Allison Hemming of The Hired Guns, asked me to give her office a last minute re-do to greet some fancy Hollywood producer”“” many kudos to you “Mr Elegant” for giving a Hollywood producer enough to go back to L.A. and poke fun of Housing Works, Allison Hemming of The Hired Guns, and NYC for the next year…I am sure they will have some good laughs.
