Video: Global AIDS Activists Take NYC By Land, Air and Sea
Spurred by this week’s UN High Level Meeting on HIV/AIDS, activists unleashed a series of bold actions across New York City on Wednesday.
The goal: Push UN member nations to set aggressive targets for fighting global AIDS.
“We are at a crossroads,” said Housing Works’ Director for National Organizing Larry Bryant, who has been living with HIV for 25 years. “World leaders are wavering in their commitment to combat AIDS just as we are turning the tide in the fight.”
Activists held flash mobs outside the UN, inside Grand Central Station, and at Bryant Park. “Freeze! Everybody clap your hands!” they sang to the tune of the Cha Cha Slide.
“How low can they go? Broken promises on AIDS! …

Photo Essay: For People With AIDS, A Sanctuary In Peril
For 26 years, the Momentum Project has provided millions of meals to poor New Yorkers living with HIV/AIDS. If Mayor Bloomberg’s budget goes through as proposed, however, he will eliminate the project’s entire grant—which totals less than $1 million—forcing the program to shut down.
Momentum provides more than 200,000 meals each year, but it is far more than just a place for dinner. Its four meal sites, which are located in church basements around the city, serve as sanctuaries for the most marginalized people with AIDS. ADAP Watch: AIDS Drug Wait List Hits 8,111 in 13 States
As of June 2, the wait list to receive lifesaving AIDS medication through the nation’s AIDS Drug Assistance Programs had hit 8,111 people across 13 states.
The number of people waiting to receive medication through state-run AIDS drug programs has increased more than 5,000 percent since August 2009, according to the National Alliance of State and Territorial AIDS Directors. The federal government has reacted with little urgency, however, allotting just $25 million in additional dollars to the program for FY 2012.
To help readers keep tabs on the growing ADAP crisis, we are now posting the ADAP Watch—the document that tracks increasing cuts to the program—each week, and including it in our Friday morning newsletter.

Housing Works Youth Outreach
Housing Works first LGBT youth program is in need of some volunteers to conduct outreach around Brooklyn to Young Gay men between the ages of 18-24. Any individual in need of services and not a young gay man will still be referred to Housing Works for assistance.
The outreach will be conducted in several areas in Brooklyn, as well as Union Square and the West Village to target homeless or gay men in unstable housing situations. Volunteers will gather as much information as possible from the individual and refer the person to ENY for Testing and Counseling.
