ADAP Watch: AIDS Drug Wait List Jumps to 8,404 in 13 States
As of June 16, the wait list to receive lifesaving AIDS medication through the nation’s AIDS Drug Assistance Programs had risen to 8,404 people across 13 states.
The number of people waiting to receive medication through state-run AIDS drug programs has increased more than 5,000 percent since August 2009, according to the National Alliance of State and Territorial AIDS Directors. The federal government has reacted with little urgency, however, allotting just $25 million in additional dollars to the program for FY 2012.
To help readers keep tabs on the growing ADAP crisis, we are now posting the ADAP Watch—the document that tracks increasing cuts to the program—each week, and including it in our Friday morning newsletter.

With All Eyes on NY Gay Marriage, GENDA Passes in Assembly
New York’s marriage equality bill is not the only monumental piece of LGBT legislation that could pass in the final days of this year’s legislative session.
Yesterday, a bipartisan group of state assembly members passed the Gender Expression Nondiscrimination Act (GENDA). Sponsored by Assemblyman Richard Gottfried, the legislation would make it illegal to discriminate on the basis of gender identity and expression in health care, employment, housing and other areas.
“In New York State it is still legal to fire people for being transgender,” said Melissa Sklarz, director of the New York Trans Rights Organization. “It’s still legal to arrest people for using restrooms. It’s still ok for transgender teachers to be fired. It’s still ok for anyone outside the …

Action Alert: Urgent Action Needed to Save Medicaid
Republicans AND Democrats are working on a deal to make substantial cuts to Medicaid!
Medicaid is the largest single payer of health care for people with HIV/AIDS, as well as for people with mental illness and chronic chemical dependence.
Don’t let cuts happen!
Cuts to Medicaid would seriously undermine an already feeble national health care reform program. The cuts threaten you, your friends, your family, and your neighbors.
Call your senators TODAY and tell them to resist all efforts to undermine Medicaid through funding cuts, spending caps, or block grants.
1. Call Congress at 866-922-4970 and ask to be connected to one of your senator’s offices.
2. When you get through, say: “I’m calling to urge the Senator to oppose …Posted on June 15, 2011 at 11:25 am

UN Declaration Fails To Recognize Housing As Treatment
In a critical declaration on HIV/AIDS signed last week, UN member states made laudatory pledges toward a host of ambitious goals, most notably aiming to get 15 million people on antiretrovirals by 2015. The declaration won enthusiastic approval from major AIDS organizations, as well as from mainstream media outlets like the New York Times.
What member states “forgot” to do in that document, however, is include access to medically appropriate housing as a key structural tool in preventing and treating HIV/AIDS.
The omission reflects continued failure by AIDS activists and governments to recognize the crucial role that safe housing will play in ending AIDS. It also demonstrates a flawed emphasis on individual approaches to stopping the virus, rather …

Construction at 874 Jefferson is proceeding according to schedule
Construction at 874 Jefferson is proceeding according to schedule. Demolition of the original interiors is complete, and new floor joists, sub-flooring, and stairs have been installed. As the building experienced a fire under previous ownership, very little of the interior was salvageable. This gave us the opportunity to redesign the entire building from the inside while maintaining the historic façade. The result will be a new supportive housing residence that is nearly indistinguishable from its rowhouse neighbors.
To meet the needs of the target population, we carved twelve studio apartments out of the six existing two-bedroom units, created a light-filled common space in what was once a cellar, and designed the entire building to meet
ADA accessibility requirements. While the units are small, …

Addressing the UN, Haitian AIDS Activist Criticizes Its Neglect of Housing, Transgender Issues
In an emotional speech this afternoon at the UN High Level Meeting on AIDS, Haitian AIDS activist Esther Boucicault expressed her gratitude for international aid to Haiti while criticizing the world body’s short-sightedness on housing and transgender issues. To the dismay of AIDS advocates, the new UN Declaration on HIV/AIDS to be released this week does not include housing as part of its “effective global response” to AIDS, nor does it make any reference to transgender people, who are at high risk for HIV.
Regarding the UN Declaration, Boucicault said, “I must express my grave disappointment that housing and transgender people were deleted from the Declaration agreed upon this week … While we all know the critical …

World AIDS Day Ideas
Hi everyone
We have two big challenges coming up and want your ideas about how best to make the most of them.
Right now we have summer! Especially in July and August this means our foot traffic and in-store sales are far lower than in other months – in fact we lose money over the summer once all our expenses are taken into account. So what are your ideas to drive foot traffic into your store or all our stores? What are you already planning? What have you seen work in other stores or places you have worked in the past? What would be fun and low cost/high impact? The aim is to drive traffic in to our stores and boost sales over summer.
December …
