  • 2010’s AIDS Heroes and Villains: Unknown Crusaders and Thorny Foes

2010’s AIDS Heroes and Villains: Unknown Crusaders and Thorny Foes

As we approached the end of the year, the Update conducted an entirely unscientific survey of AIDS activists in an effort to bring you, loyal readers, a list of 2010’s most important unsung AIDS heroes and all-too-familiar villains.

Our heroes received infrequent recognition but worked tirelessly to fight AIDS. They spoke out against repressive regimes, helped focus the world’s attention on AIDS, and served as bellwethers in challenging economic times.

Our villains stymied efforts to combat the epidemic. They cut funds, championed discriminatory policies, went back on promises or refused to use their power to advance the fight against AIDS.

  • Charles King Op-Ed: Shock Tactics Won’t Stop HIV

Charles King Op-Ed: Shock Tactics Won’t Stop HIV

Housing Works President and CEO Charles King on why a controversial anti-HIV video featuring rotting brains and decaying bones is bad policy—and doomed to fail.

Earlier this month, the New York City Department of Health unveiled a short campaign designed to convince young gay men to use condoms. It featured rotting brains, decaying bones and bleeding anuses—the results, the campaign claims, of HIV. The spot is scheduled to run again in January. Housing Works joins a host of other groups, including Gay Men’s Health Crisis, Latinos Unidos Contra el SIDA and the National Association of People Living with AIDS in demanding that the campaign never be used again.

The campaign is misguided for numerous reasons. The …

  • Following On-Air Slur, Haitian Community and Allies Blast HOT 97 Outside Studio

Following On-Air Slur, Haitian Community and Allies Blast HOT 97 Outside Studio

A coalition of Haitian community groups, AIDS activists and politicians are calling for the immediate termination of HOT 97 DJ Luis Diaz following a disparaging radio statement he made about Haitian women on Friday.

“Use your airwaves to educate, not denigrate,” said New York State Committeewoman Rodneyse Bichotte, at a press conference outside HOT 97’s studio this morning. At least 40 people gathered outside the West Village building, many waving Haitian flags and signs that read “Hot 97 is about racism for ratings.”

Besides calling for Diaz’s removal, the Haitian community is suggesting HOT 97 could apologize by creating or donating to a community program. Carine Jocelyn, executive director at Diaspora Community Services, is asking the station to start an …

  • Construction Begins at 874 Jefferson Avenue in Brooklyn

Housing Works is proud to announce that construction is underway at our new residence project at 874 Jefferson Avenue in Brooklyn! The project consists of the gut renovation of a vacant townhouse in Bedford Stuyvesant into twelve units of supportive housing for formerly homeless individuals living with HIV and AIDS. Each unit will contain a full bathroom and kitchen, and the ground floor will include a reception area, space for support staff, and a lounge for resident usage. The project also involves the preservation of the historic façade, a completely rebuilt interior, an excavated rear yard, and a host of green features. Within the confines of a 25-foot townhouse, this all makes for a very complicated development project.

Over the course of the …

  • Underreported: The Link Between Julian Assange and Sweden’s Repressive HIV Law

Underreported: The Link Between Julian Assange and Sweden’s Repressive HIV Law

The arrest of Wikileaks founder Julian Assange has focused a spotlight on Sweden’s supposedly liberal, human rights-based sex conduct laws, which allow for a rape conviction even when a perpetrator uses a low level of coercion.

The extradition case against Assange began when two Swedish women contacted authorities to compel him to take an STD test. As reported by Reuters, Assange may have tried to have sex with the women without a condom.

What STD are the women worried about? That hasn’t been made public. But if, as part of an STD test, Assange were to test positive for HIV, the legal consequences could be dire. When it comes to the virus, Sweden’s policies are far from “liberal” or …
