    Haiti One Year later Appeal

“Let’s show our support and solidarity with Haiti and demand action!”
—Charles King, president and CEO of Housing Works.

One year ago, the world stood in awe of the devastation inflicted on the nation of Haiti. The 7.0 earthquake killed 300,000 and displaced more than one million. While the international community responded with substantial humanitarian aid, significant work remains. The pace of reconstruction has been unacceptably slow.

Today, on the one-year anniversary of the eathquake, Housing Works marches from Times Square to the United Nations with Diaspora Community Services, our partner in Haiti, to demand that world leaders take action now to remove rubble, provide safe and secure shelter for the displaced, provide clean water and sanitation, and provide jobs …

Cuomo Reissues Order Protecting Transgender Employees, But Questions Linger

Will New York’s new governor be a friend to the transgender community? It’s only week one, but it looks like he might be.

Cuomo re-signed a Paterson order this week protecting transgender state employees from discrimination. LGBT advocates are hailing the move as a small step toward passing the Gender Expression Nondiscrimination Act (GENDA), statewide legislation that would protect all New York residents—not just those employed by the state—from being discriminated against on the basis of gender expression or identity.

Paterson issued the order in late 2009 but slipped out of office without finalizing guidelines that determine exactly how New York plans to protect its transgender employees. The move (or lack thereof) left Cuomo in charge of establishing those rules.

Why We’re Marching: A Closer Look at Hurdles Facing Haiti

On Wednesday, Jan. 12, New Yorkers from all walks of life will gather in Times Square for a march marking the one-year anniversary of the earthquake in Haiti. Speakers will include Rev. Al Sharpton, Police Commissioner Ray Kelly, Rev. Jacques Andre DeGraff, Comptroller John Liu and others. The march is a show of solidarity (check out this video)—but it’s also a protest with four key demands for progress in Haiti, which has been agonizingly, unacceptably slow.

The event next week, called Marching for Change, will call on Haitian and world leaders to address the four major obstacles to recovery in Haiti: rubble removal; safe and secure shelter; clean water and sanitation; and jobs. Below, we explain where Haiti stands in relation to …
