Action Alert: Don’t Let Republicans Repeal Health Care Reform!

Update Jan. 19 @ 6.30 p.m. The House of Representatives voted to repeal the health care reform bill today, voting mostly on party lines. The bill will go to the Senate now, which has no plans to take it up. Thanks to all who called!

In a move that will almost certainly have crushing effects on millions of Americans, Republicans are pushing for a repeal of the health care reform bill passed last year. A vote will take place in the House of Representatives on Wednesday, Jan. 19. The repeal would have a negative—and disproportionate—impact on people living with HIV, denying many the health care coverage needed to survive.

    Angered?

    Here’s what to do.

  • N.C. Rep: Government Shouldn’t Fund HIV Treatment for People “Living in Perverted Lifestyles”

N.C. Rep: Government Shouldn’t Fund HIV Treatment for People “Living in Perverted Lifestyles”

In North Carolina this week, state Rep. Larry Brown announced that the government should not spend money to treat adults with HIV/AIDS who “caused it by the way they live.”

His unfortunate and ridiculously uninformed comments are the latest in a string of events and reports that reveal just how distressing the situation has become for HIV-positive individuals in the South.

(Curious about the picture? Last year he called gay people “fruit loops” in an e-mail to other legislators).

This month, the Center for HIV Law & Policy released a report that found that 50 percent of HIV-positive Southerners who needed legal assistance accessing basic rights—like housing or health care—could not get that assistance.

    Meanwhile, Southerners now …

Video and Photos: Haiti Earthquake Anniversary March and Rally in NYC

With tears literally frozen to their faces, hundreds of Haitians and their allies marched through Manhattan today, marking the one-year anniversary of the earthquake that devastated Haiti last January.

“One year later, with all the people walking the airport at Port-au-Prince like it’s a red carpet, we have not seen rebuilding in Haiti,” said Rev. Al Sharpton outside the United Nations. “I’ve come tonight to say, ‘Where’s the money? Where’s the rebuilding? Where’s the help?’”

A powerful force gathered beneath the lights at Times Square for the start of the rally, the largest New York event to mark the quake. Among them were schoolchildren; a host of rabbis and priests; City Councilmembers Matthieu Eugene, Jumaane Williams and Ydanis Rodriguez; Brooklyn Deputy Borough President Yvonne Graham; …

  • After Haiti HIV Slur, NYC’s HOT 97 Makes Amends

After Haiti HIV Slur, NYC’s HOT 97 Makes Amends

Cipha Sounds, the DJ who inflamed the New York Haitian community after an on-air statement about Haitian women and HIV, is back on HOT 97 after a brief suspension.

“He lost family members to HIV,” said Ebro Darden, vice president of programming for Emmis New York, which runs HOT 97. “So it’s close home for him . . . Obviously he’s a comedian, so he made a stupid joke.”

The station, meanwhile, is working to make amends. On Monday, former Manhattan Borough President C. Virginia Fields appeared on a morning show to talk about HIV. On Wednesday, the station will run a segment about women in Haiti after the earthquake. And HOT 97 will send a music truck to …
