I want to say Keith Cylar was really shined when he was dancing. I'll never forget when we met at Province Town, Cape Cod. I was dancing on the stage I didn't realize Keith was behind me. I turned to him. I say oh my god he is my boss. I gulp and leave him alone, he said come on and let us have fun . I didn't stay there. I wish I had danced with him. I know he is great dancer..He is our guardian angel and will watch over housingworks forever. prayer with Deaf Services always.

What a great loss. Keith was a friend and occasional adversary for whom I had the greatest respect. I will miss him -- his sense of humor, his sens of pupose and his sense of rage. As we fight on to see an end to AIDS and homelessness, Keith's spirit will forever be part of the struggle.

It was with great sadness that I learned of Keith's death. I worked at Housing Works in the early days (1992) as a casemanager in the Manhattan Scattered Site Program. Although I was to move to Seattle only 8 months later, my experiences at Housing Works were truly unique and memorable and full of amazing memories of clients and activism and compassion. Keith was someone I deeply respected and I feel his willingness to hire me changed my life. I am still involved with working with PLWA's and believe it was my start at Housing Works that allowed me to realize my hearts work, my calling, my passion. My deepest condolences to all at Housing Works and to Keith's family. I am eternally grateful and deeply honored for having known Keith (albeit briefly) in my lifetime.

Keith was a great inspiration in my life as I struggle to accept my own HIV status in the larger society and as an upcomming social worker, that this can be a powerfull tool to break barriers in a professional arena. Keith showed me how to stand up for what I believe in and to create change. I admired his ability to stay strong and fight for what he believed, and that was to end the twin crisis of homelessnss and AIDS once and for all. We must continue this fight in his honor. "We must do what we needed to do yesterday today, for tomorrow might be to late". Keith I love you...until we meet again!

I offer my heartfelt condolences to Charles King and the entire Housing Works Family.
Keith, a legend in this community helped me define a passion in my life, in fighting the twin crises of homelessness and AIDS.

Keith was always larger than life. His individuality was an inspiration for those who had the pleasure to meet him. I particularly recall his advice concerning my daughter... Keith, intimated that "we" Black mothers are always trying to protect our children from the realities of life... and that -and I am paraphrasing- because of her exposure to the violent behavior of her austic cousin she will be able to identify and deal with others who present like he did." I am proud to say that I am a part of his legacy and I will miss him, his zest for life, his commitment to others and most of all his ability to face life without judging others prematurely. Keith, ciaos!

Keith.... There are no words to express my disbelief in hearing of your passing. I remember our talks and your encouragement throughout the rough times. I also remember the joy of our laughter after five o'clock on the seventh floor. Thank you for being you and for being there. I will miss you.

The world is a stage and we all have a part to play; and Keith played his part to perfection. He was a voice for those who could not advocate for themselves; and what a voice that was! Keith taught me to fight for what is right, and to not be judgmental. His sensitive side always knew when something was bothering me and his favorite words were, "Let's take a walk...now, what's wrong? ...Ok, we can fix that." He was my inspiration and my role model. Since his passing the memories have overtaken me and I wrote the following in his memory:
When tomorrow comes...without you
When today cease to end;
I look away, so I won't see
When tomorrow comes...without you.
Through the years, through the tears,
The pain just won't end;
The tears, the fears, the memories,
They just won't let me be
When tomorrow comes...without you.
Farewell for now Keith, until we meet again.
My condolence, prayers and support to Charles and Keith's family.

The Housing Works family has assisted me greatly with handling my infection with HIV. As an employee of this great organization I found the direction and peace I most needed as a newly diagnosed person in 1994. Keith was for me a true leader, ally, and friend. Listening and helping me individually when I was having difficulty with some personal problems.
His work centered completely for the people he loved to serve was both genuine and unique.
It saddens me that I will never be able to see or speak to him again, and that the HIV/AIDS community has lost a great leader.

To Charles & the Cylar Family
I am sadden by the passing of Keith. I know that he is in a better place but he will be greatly missed. I loved him so much, he made me smile when I was feeling down. He would come around on the 7th floor and we would dance the hustle in the hall! We looked crazy and everyone would laugh but it made my day as well as his! I use to watch him during all our events and his energy was unbelieveable.

I first met keith in passing. One day I was in a argument with someone and he interviened, I can't remember what he said ,but I'll always remember the intelligence mixed with where you were at. When I graduated from the job training program,Keith said to get your feet wet, work hard and move on and make way for the next person coming to the program. As I re-invented myself to move on I can't help but know that my determination and the words that he spoke at my graduation is why I'm a sucessful substance abuse counselor today. The beautiful about it is I thanked you at the valintine day party. And I thank you again Keith Cylar. P.S. keep your shirt on!

Dear Charles & The Housing Works Community:
The purpose of this letter to expressed my condolences to you and the Housing Works Community for the great lost of a wonderful man, Keith Cylar. I can't even begin to explain how the news make me feel. I lost a big brother, a role model and the best advocated for People with AIDS, substance abuser, homeless and Gay and Lesbian ever. I am in shock. His passion and commitment was amazing and "fierce". The poor and disfrancise in this country had lost someone who had fight so hard for better quality of life and for this community to be treat with dignity. Keith advocacy work had impacted many HIV/AIDS community directly and indirectly and shape the direction of services for PWA.
I always remember when I was released from prison and I went for a job interview at Housing Works, I meet Keith. At that time his hair was long enough for him to "flip it from side to side", I was impressed. I though what, "a good looking Dude". I also noticed his step so tall and so proud. If I begin to talk about his taste for cloth Wow!! His suit were always fit and impecable. Keith knew that he was "fine" OH yea "what an ego".
Keith and Charle could have very easy turn me down but you didn't and because of the opportunity Housing Works gave me I am a better person today and excellent social worker. My commitment and dedication to fight for the rights of PWA became greater because of my experiences at Housing Works and being exposed to the accions of great men with a big vision, a big heart and of course Keith had a big mouth for the truth. Keith also had great rhythm and excellent dancing skills. We partner a few time at Gay and Portorrican parade and we move and shack for hours, we had a great time. Keith always had a great time, whether it was getting arrested to bring attention to an issue or because Housing Works was able to housed someone was homeless. Although, this is a very sad time for all but I can't help myself I got to smile while I am remeniscened of his dancing skill and the fact that he was a "Party Animal"
Finally, the world is a better place because of Keith. His work and accomplishment is an inspiration to me and many other services providers in this country.
I love you Keith for ever. Your efforts are not in vain.
May God bless Charles and the Housing Works Community.

I am still in denial over the passing of Kieth. It is a confusing time for many of us. I will especially miss his favorite line when I entered the 13th street site. "How are you doing bitch, get into my office!" At which time Keith would drill me on my health issues and was truly concerned that I was getting the best healthcare possible. I will miss his catty remarks and quick wit. We have lost a great man. Kieth was the reason many of us are a here and I will never forget that.I will miss him deeply.

It is with great dismay that we learn of Keith Cyler's passing. We are in the last stages of editing our documentary about the policies of the Giuliani administration and recently worked on a segment about Giuliani's vindictive policies against Housing Works. We interviewed both Keith and Charles a number of times and were struck by the unyielding determination to help homeless infected with HIV/AIDS. Keith's words to us served as an inspiration to tell the truth about policies that attack the most vulnerable in our society. We will miss him. There are few that put such energy into that most important of pursuits: helping others.

My deepest condolences to Keith's family and friends. As a former Housing Work's employee, I can remember vividly, back to 1996 when I started at Housing Work's, the warm and friendly atmosphere I immediately felt. I will admit, I thought it was somewhat strange to enjoy so very much, coming to work everyday. With the leadership of Keith and Charles, everyday seemed like a new and vibrant day. I can also remember late nights after five, Keith running through the hallways like a child, full of energy and excitement. I would think to myself _ "Is he for real??" I would also have the opportunity to listen to him at trainings and in meetings, and discover that he was a powerful speaker full of wisdom. Keith was truly an all around good guy, and I thank him for giving me my first big break into the worl of advocacy to end the twin crisi of homelessness and HIV/AIDS. I can't think of a better place to start.
To Charles, you have my deepest sympathy. It always seemed like the two names always went together - "Keith & Charles", and I can only imagine the void you must feel at this time. My thoughts and prayers are with you, Keith's Mother, and the rest of the Housing Work's family.

ironically, i had just bumped into keith the thursday prior to his passing..as we had not seen each other in quite some time, he was very suprised to see me ...we made plans to meet the following week...in his own inimitable style, he demanded to know why i wasn't working for him anymore...keith would encourage me to go back to school one minute and in the next, call into question my character on the basis of my wearing black nail polish..repartee with keith was like running a race, exhausting but exhilarating..when i think of keith, i think of his sense of humor, passion for life, limitless empathy and compassion for others, his brilliance...i am convinced that fate put him in my path the other night, however briefly, and for that i am grateful..

Keith gave me my first job at Housing Works in 1993. He was a great man who belived in teaching others about AIDS/HIV and never giving up the fight to help gain benefits for those living with it. He also believed in giving others the opportunity to learn and grow in a career. I remember not having a babysitter and bringing my then 6mo. old daughter into work. She'd start to fuss and Keith would come over and look her and say "Oh no there will be none of that, "and he'd pick her up and smile." He was a man with great compassion and he will be missed. RIP Brother Keith

Keith Cylar was a man so profound in his accomplishments it seems I am not worthy to speak about him.
Mr. Cylar made contributions to society both beneficial and astounding. The mere fact he confronted our so called gov't officials without fear proved just how serious he was about his work. It is my belief that God guided him to do the work he did. Mr. Cylar gave me and countless others hope and a change for a better life, when those in power would not. If Mr. Cylar had more time, Housing Works would become nationwide or evene world wide.
People who do not care "do not" accomplish the things that Mr. Cylar did. You see states of people who're accomplished great things. Did they really accomlish great things? Did they help those who could not help themselves? Did they help the outcast, the oppressed? Did they help those whose own gov't would not help? "NO"! But, Mr. Cylar did. He loved us. We should continue to show our love for him by building upon what he has started and do so with passion. Mr. King and everyone else lost a good friend, but Mr. cylar lives within us and forever shall.

It is hard to accept the loss of one of the true leaders in the struggle. I learned more working at Housing Works than probably at any job before or since. I loved running into Keith at events in DC since I moved down here in 1997. One of the most attractive men I've ever seen, and one of the bravest, Keith's loss reminds us of all the work that is yet to be done. I wish everyone at Housing Works well during this difficult time.

It has been my honor to be Keith's colleague for more than a decade and my privilege to have been his friend. I first had the opportunity to work with Keith on a project to help control the spread of Tuberculosis in New York. At our first planning meeting we reviewed our strategy to identify, treat and follow infected individuals. Everyone in the room seemed to be on board with the plan until Keith, ever the quiet and retiring one, shouted out, "So you want us to play Tuberculosis police - I'm not doing that!" Once I was scraped off the ceiling, I realized Keith was right. He wasn't trying to be difficult. He was pushing us all to find a better way to engage people in their own care.
And that was characteristic of Keith; merely good was not good enough. People could do more, could do better. More and better - that was his essence. Whether evaluating a new program, providing a new service, planning a new event, advocating, lobbying, traveling, learning counseling, or teaching, Keith was tireless. And his enthusiasm spilled over into everyday life. What a pleasure to see Keith become ever more animated while describing a new restaurant, a new drink, the latest fashion. I know he'd be fussing about wardrobe today. But his real passion was for his family at Housing Works. No detail was too trivial, no problem too big or small for him to take on. He'd call me often to share his joy at getting a new grant, to share an idea for a new research effort. He was tirelessly creative in developing programs to cast a broad net to serve ever-increasing numbers of people in need. He'd struggle to find new ways to motivate staff and clients to do more, to do better, and he never stopped pushing himself to do the same. I recall so many telephone conversations with Keith concerning the health of clients and staff, but almost none about his own illness. His energy seemed boundless, and so, it is somehow incomprehensible for me to be here today...but here we are paying tribute to a real leader and a great friend.
Keith really did do more for so many people than could ever be expected and he never allowed success to be an end in itself. He always did better. And that is his legacy to us - to me - to continue to try to improve our world and ourselves as he always did.

Keith: My Friend, Colleague and Mentor.
You will be sorely missed. It is still very hard for me to believe that you are actaully gone, but your spirit will live on with me for an eternity. Your tireless efforts and achievements will long be remembered and will not be in vain as we will continue to carry your torch. I will always appreciate and remember your willingness to listen and provide support to me. I will certainly remember our recent trip to Washington D.C. and the things we wished to plan for the Housing Works community. Thanks for being such a great friend and mentor. I will miss you, but we shall meet again. God Bless You and yours.

Mr. Cylar came to my Foundations of Social Work class at Hunter College in Spring 2002. I was so very impressed with his work and so thrilled to know that such activists exist in our city and in the field of social work. He gave me such hope. His legacy will continue and I extend my deepest sympathy to all those so touched by his passing.

Sorry to hear about Keith's death. As a volunteer at Housing Works Used Book Cafe, I admire him for his activism and the wonderful works he left behind. To find a cure for AIDS, and to end homelessness motivates most of us. In his memory, we'll complete his work.
What a great legacy he left behind. Thanks for creating the means for all of us to help.

It is with deepest love and fraternal ties that I express my love and admiration for you and all that you have accomplished while here. You are a true brother I have had in my life and shared my concerns with. May God keep your soul in his hands as you have kept your love for others in your daily works.

Keith was the kind of human being that we all learn from. He taught me about fearlessness, about the joy of life and living, about dedication and heart and how to use the anger we hold that arises from the injustices we face in a laser-like way to not just agitate for agitation's sake--but to secure genuine change. Change that helps people who have been hurt in this world. Whether it is the people most directly helped through programs at Housing Works--or even those people whose hearts and minds have been closed to the suffering of others. Keith could open even the hearts and change the spirit of those who may at first have resisted the changes he sought to make in the world.
Of course, there are still too many who rely on their own selfishness and cynicism as false guides in their path in the world--so the struggle continues. I am honored to have known this crazy, marvelous guy--and his friend and partner, Charles King, who I count as one of the many humans that I have been blessed to know in this short life we have as another human to emulate.
Carry on! I stand with you all.

Keith Cylar was a rare, true leader in the ongoing struggle for the rights of HIV positive people in this country. But what I remember most about Keith was his joyfulness in the face of adversity - his ready smile, the twinkle in his eye, and his ability to engage with any and every human being.

When one has had to undergo the ordeal of living with HIV disease in this society, one does not have to personally know another HIV+ person who has chosen to devote her or his life to being an activist for the CAUSE. i had never heard nor seen Keith Cylar, but I do know of what he has done for housing.
Just knowing of his dedication to the Cause and to know that there may not be anyone to replace him, I do mourn his death and offer my sympathy to his family and friends.
His life and death are inspirations to me as another HIV+ activist to keep on going until my light is out or HIV disease is seen as a disease and not a social issue as well as to see that there HIV is under control.

I had the high honor of having Keith as a close friend. A friend, I'll add here, that knew when to put a cheerful arm around your shoulders and when to give you a sad look that spoke volumes.
I'm going to miss all of that...

In life people cross your path, both good and bad, but all none-the-less leave an imprint on the direction you take with your next steps. Although I met Keith briefly a few years ago at the SVN conference his imprint is one that showed me what great dedication and passion for a belief is. He defined description and left an imprint that will never be forgotton. And most importantly he changed the lives of many on this soil...which when things come to an end, is all that counts!

Keith,
I will surely miss you and the fire and passion you possesed while here on earth. The talks we shared and the lessons I learned from you and, the Housing Works community will forevever stay with me. You were such a warrior and you picked your battles wisely. You shared your triumphs and agony of deefeats with those you were fighting for. You led without shame or guilt as you faced your own struggles publicly. That is the true essence of a great leader. Your legacy as a great man, activist, pioneer, brother, friend, employer, teacher and speaker will live on. You were the light that guided so many thru the darkness of homelessness and despair. We thank you. May you rest in peace. You have inspired us all to fight the good fight and speak for those who can't speak for themselves. I say to you "well done".

Today I decided that I was going to show my lover the wonderful organization I used to work for, when I lived in NEW York. I wanted her to see the Ambassador of Kick butt. I never met a more brillant man than Mr. Cylar. I admired him in every aspect of light and always spoke of his courage. I am sorry for his loss. I will never forget him.

My dear friend keith,
you were very kind to me once, sitting down to say something encouraging. Those words changed a goodbye to a hello. You are dearly missed by so many, my little prayer is that you find the same kind of home that you created here. This is a prayer from my Nation, the Yankton Sioux Tribe of Dakota in South Dakota. It got us through many difficult times when the world turned on us, and we turned on each other. To honor you:

My most sincerest condolences to the family and friends of Keith Cylar. When I remember Keith I remember a man that would have water fights with the children at Housing Works annual picnic and a man that would dance, dance, dance at every party that was held by the organization. Even I myself was given the priveledge of having one of those dances. I will never forget how humble and passionate he was. I am glad to have been given the honor of meeting as well as working for Mr. Cylar. May he rest FOREVER in PEACE. Former Housing Works Employee

Every day something occurs around me to remind me of your ability to see
beyond the obvious, and your unique combination of compassion,
tolerance, perception, and people skills to mend whatever is wrong.
Today, almost one month before the second anniversary of your death I am
feeling melancholy and I need your wisdom, I need to visualize and
imagine your arm on my shoulder, and I need to hear you say "What's
wrong...Ok let's fix it!" I miss you Keith!

As a newly-made employee of the Housing Works Family, I did not have the Pleasure or Honor to be in the meer prescence of Mr. Cylar. Viewing his tribute, touched me so deep down inside. And although I have never met him, that day I felt like I've know him for years. The works and vision of both Mr. Cylar and Mr. King makes me so proud and honored to be a part of Housing Works Inc.
To Mr. King: whom after a few months I finally have had the honor to meet. My condolences deeply reaches out to you. To Mr. Cylar's family, may you be proud of his work and know that he entered this world with a plan and place already set and left this world with deep impact and pride for us all.
May he forever more Rest in Peace and Never Forgotten. God Bless us All.

Keith you were truly one of those people that eventhough you just brushed through my life,I will feel as if you changed it forever. You are a loss that will never heal. Your leaving too early will always be felt, which is what you would want, because that's the kind of feeling that moves a person to action! You showed the world what a great party life is and how much fun you can have working hard to help others. Your love of life and respect for others and the creative process always reminded me of that famous quote from "Auntie Mame" : "Life's a banquet and most poor suckers are starving to death." You helped make the Earth a better place while you were here. I have no doubt that you are continuing to do the same where you are now. I only hope you have my name in big letters on the invite list so when I get to that same gate I can just stroll right into that great big party in the sky.

My condolences to Charles and the Housing Works Org.
I worked at Housing Works from 1994 thru 1997 in the JTP as an English Instructor/Counselor. My experiences at Housing Works were unique and memorable. There are plenty of good memories of clients and companions... Keith was someone I deeply respected. His kindness and caring for others will never be forgotten. Housing Works lost a great man, however, we have gained "Our Guardian Angel". Keith was already an angel here on earth. Now, he is helping us from heaven.
May God Bless him always.

My Dearest Keith,
I did not know until this week that you left us. We were neighbors on 30th street for several years and got to know each other quite well, throughout our daily struggles. I miss the times we spent together and the advice you gave me on more than one occasion.
May I see you in Heaven in black leather listening to some good House.
Love, Tom
