Fighting unfair rent policies
People with AIDS are the only New Yorkers on public assistance expected to pay more than 30 percent of their incomes for rent. Because of this policy many people are living on as little as $12 a day.
A bill capping people with AIDS receiving housing assistance passed through the Assembly Social Services committee two years in a row, but has not moved in the Senate. Housing Works will continue to push for this bill, so that people with AIDS don’t have to make choices like deciding whether to pay for toilet paper or soap.
