The New York State Budget
Since 1995, Housing Works has been a force to be reckoned with in Albany, bringing clients to the Capitol to lobby legislators three times a week when Legislature is in session and working to maintain and expand resources for people with HIV and AIDS throughout the state.
Despite a difficult budget year in 2009, Housing Works advocacy efforts contributed to New York State’s first public assistance grant increase in 20 years. Thanks to lobbying by participants in Housing Works Job Training Program, a proposed cut to New York State’s welfare-to-work job training program never came to pass.
But perhaps our most gratifying recent win on the state level was the passage of Medicaid reform, which will ensure that millions in Medicaid dollars are rerouted to poor communities that Medicaid is intended to help. In addition to lobbying legislators, Housing Works stuck its neck out for the Governor’s important proposal and, in a series of op-eds, demonstrations and high-profile radio ads, directly confronted the hospital lobby that was trying to sabotage his Medicaid efforts.
