The New York City Budget
Every year New York City proposes a new budget, and every year Housing Works city advocates spend countless hours analyzing the budget proposals, testifying before committees to increase or protect funding for essential AIDS programs. Nearly every budget season, Housing Works clients, staff and supporters must engage in rallies and demonstrations in order to ensure that city politicians do the right thing.
During the largest recession since the Great Depression, Mayor Bloomberg proposed $10 million in cuts to supportive AIDS housing, nutrition and HIV testing services, and nearly $20 million in cuts to public health services overall. In May 2009, Housing Works staged a high-profile protest outside the Mayor’s office that shed desperately needed light on the potential harm of the Mayor’s budget. The City Council subsequently restored nearly $4 million in essential funding that Bloomberg tried to axe.
The Mayor is expected to propose more cuts this year, and Housing Works will do everything it can to make sure they don’t happen.
