Fighting for funding

Housing Works understands that budget decisions are policy decisions. Particularly in these tough economic times, the potential cuts to crucial AIDS services at the city, state and federal levels are imminent. Housing Works doesn’t just sit back and let budget cuts deciminate AIDS housing, prevention, treatment and care. Housing Works lobbies elected official, holds rallies and when necessary, engages in civil disobedience to make sure our elected officials know that AIDS cuts still=death.

• Housing Works staffers staged a civil disobedience at the U.S. Capitol to protest the flat-funding of Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS funding

• The same protest called on Congress to lift the federal ban on syringe exchange funding. The next day, Congress took the first steps to lifting the ban.

• Through intense advocacy and activism, Housing Works convinced the New York City Council to restore $4 million in AIDS funding to the 2009 budget

• Housing Works advocacy played a crucial role in New York State’s Medicaid reform, which redirects funding to poor people and on-the-ground community organizations
